They're Repeating to America What They Performed with Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the American president began displaying the public his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – truly, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.

The obvious and clear fact that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of extreme compassion centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Finest of Us

So I have been heartened to observe the persistent defiance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and requests to the finest aspects in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or not?

America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the best about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply pretending the most negative about the nation and Christianity did not happen; it signifies both modesty and belief, a mixture that genuine national faithful should be comfortable with.
