The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
